Dive deep into the architecture of Ostrobothnian houses in Lapua, Ylistaro and Nurmo. What role do houses play in the story of Ostrobothnia? What were Ostrobothnian houses like in the past, what are they like now, and how can we build continuity with new construction? What kinds of ideas can we adopt from Ostrobothnian architectural tradition and apply to our own building, furnishing and interior design?
- Our journey begins in the two-and-a-half-storey Kosola House. The tour will introduce you to ongoing renovations, the story of the house and the ways in which architectural history interrogates the building’s past.
- We stop for lunch at Wanha Karhunmäki on the border of Lapua and Ylistaro. While there, you will also have a chance to buy souvenirs at the gift shop and explore the Körtti Museum.
- At Mummadesign, you will find locally made home textiles and textile products with South Ostrobothnian designs.
- A new area is being built in the heritage village of Kitinoja in Ylistaro that will consist of traditional Ostrobothnian houses. On the tour, you will learn all about the founding of the heritage village, the rules that govern what is built there and the experiences of the first private builders.
- In the Nurmo Museum’s Mäki-Teppo house, you will learn all about traditional interiors.
- You will get to see the beautiful and nationally important landscapes of the Nurmo River Valley and the numerous Ostrobothnian houses dotted across it. You will learn all about the fascinating characteristics of the houses and their significance to Ostrobothnian identity.
- Finally, the trip will end at the Jokilaakso Garden Centre in Lapua, where the old buildings are surrounded by thousands of fragrant garden plants both traditional and new to the area, including a rose garden and one of Finland’s largest herb gardens. In the summer, the area also has an enchanting café and many domestic animals.
